Wild Harbour Oily Fish
Fresh Wild Mackerel
Wild Harbour
Cornish ‘Line Caught’ Mackerel
So plentiful in Cornish waters, for many years mackerel was way out of fashion. But today it’s rightly recognised as one of the finest fish in the sea, increasingly popular with top chefs and in the smartest restaurants. Mackerel is a versatile, tasty and incredibly healthy fish. Its rich-tasting, dark, oily flesh is full of nutritious goodness and goes well with just about everything.
Our whole, fresh mackerel range from 200g to 600g. An average fish of around 350g makes a good-sized serving for one.
We don’t pre-prepare mackerel fillets to avoid damaging the flesh. We sell the whole fish and then prepare as requested, either gutted with the head removed, or filleted. Please be aware that filleted mackerel will yield approximately 40% of the whole fish weight.

Mackerel Information
There are mackerel along the Cornish coast all year round, but during the summer months, they become so abundant you can virtually scoop them out of the water. From June to August, and you’ll often see the Mackerel chasing schools of tiny white bait, who end up beaching themselves in an attempt to escape. In fact, sometimes the Mackerel are so determined they’ll beach themselves too, in pursuit.
Catch Method
Many of our boats use handlines and rods to catch wild Mackerel. We have an excellent knowledge of what makes a good hand line fisherman, and many of our fisherman have been practising this method for over 30 years.

Mackerel is well-known for its grilling abilities, but it is also fantastic when grilled, pan-fried, or baked in the oven. It responds nicely to being kept simple, allowing the ocean flavour of the fish to shine through, and, of course, it responds particularly well to smoking.
Whole mackerel is wonderful baked with lemon, rosemary, and bay leaves. When preparing for the grill, we recommend cleaning the fish and removing the head, but leaving the rest of the fish intact. This makes it easier to handle with tongs and helps to keep the fish together beneath the hot flames.
It’s best to eat it right away.
Refrigerate between -0C and -5C and consume within 2-3 days.
