Fresh Monk Fish

Wild Harbour

Premium Monk Fish From Cornwall’s Day Boats

The versatile monkfish, an unattractive fish with inner beauty, is a fine-dining favourite, with firm, meaty, bone-free, white flesh that comes from the tail part of the fish. It’s low in fat and has a delicious, sweet flavour that’s akin to langoustine or lobster, and because it’s dense, it works especially well in stews and fish curries.

FLAVOUR: Sweet | TEXTURE: Firm | IN SEASON: All Year

Monk Information

Monkfish can be found in the waters of Cornwall, albeit in small numbers. So, while we land some local fish, the vast majority is sourced directly from local day boats landing into Newlyn, depending on quality and availability.

Catch Method
Our Monk fish is landed on the shore of Cornwall, caught using traditional day boat trawlers.

Seasonality: All Year – Best quality Oct – May

Did you know? Monkfish are a species of angler fish, having a growth on their heads that resembles a fishing lure and dangles above their large jaws. The decoy draws prey’s attention to needle-like teeth, diverting them just long enough for the monkfish to pounce.

Monkfish can be cooked in a variety of ways, including grilling, baking, pan-frying, and poaching. The flesh is substantial, and its delicate flavour pairs well with rather strong flavours such as paprika and curries. The sweet, meaty lightness of the fish complements the inherent salty of the meat exceptionally well. Before cooking, a thin, purple membrane behind the skin of monkfish must be removed.

Best eaten immediately.

Store in the fridge between 0ºC-5ºC, and eat within 2-3 days.
